Video Network Design Engineer

Location: Atlanta, GA

Duration: 7 months

JOB CODE DESCRIPTION:

Self-motivated and able to take on large and complex projects. Demonstrated ability to manage technical projects including timelines, costs, resources and vendor relationships. Must be able to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced, dynamic and sometimes stressful environment. Ability to work both independently as well as on teams. Must be able to work as a lead engineer in a team atmosphere. Strong attention to detail. Solid and creative problem solving skills.
Ability and desire to learn and teach

Ability to architect, plan, design, test, implement and maintain carrier class, service provider backbone and metro networks. Must have a strong multidisciplinary telecommunications background. Core focus will be on the IP packet based infrastructure supporting core video and interactive video application services. Must be able to design highly available, resilient, and scalable networks. Drive vendors toward open standard, reliable, scalable, and more cost-effective architecture.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

· Intermediate knowledge in optical transport systems.

· Fundamental knowledge in all packet based protocols such as TCP/IP, MPLS and routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP4. Advanced knowledge of LAN Switching architecture, design and implementation. Must be an expert in fundamental IP/Ethernet networking (i.e. ARP, broadcast storms, L2 Loop avoidance mechanisms, etc.)

· Fundamental understanding of modern router architecture (control plane and forwarding plane separation, switch fabric design, egress queuing, IP lookup algorithms).

· Experienced and well-rounded Telecommunications Engineer. Ability to understand Physical and Data-link layer media properties and implications as they relate to network architecture (i.e. fiber optics, PSTN, HFC, DOCSIS, RF, etc.)

· Experienced in data communications and networking principles; standards (e.g., ANSI, IETF, IEEE, MPLS&FRF, Nyquist Sampling Theorem, Shannon Information Theorem)

· Experienced in traffic engineering and bandwidth capacity management.

· Knowledge of the mathematics/physics of data network phenomena relating to network performance: response time, throughput, and availability.

· Intermediate knowledge of cable digital video architecture with advanced IP networking skills. Requires a strong understanding of core digital video components, specifically the Motorola & Scientific-Atlanta digital video networks as it relates to cable concepts such as HFC networks, RF concepts, IP networks, digital video transport, headend equipment and digital set top boxes (DSTBs).

· Strong understanding of advanced digital video applications such as middleware, Interactive Television (iTV), Video-on-Demand (VOD), Open Cable Application Platform (OCAP), network-based personal video recording (network PVR), and new technologies as they arise.

· Experience and working knowledge of common engineering design principles and methodologies with ability to read and understand engineering specifications and documentation.

· Ability to interact and provide constructive engineering guidelines as well as provide business-oriented outlook and recommendations. Ability to analyze industry trends and develop services from cutting edge technology when it makes sound business sense.

· Effective written and verbal interpersonal communication skills. Experienced at writing technical proposals and documentation.

· Beginner experience in Unix based operating systems, shell environments, and applications related to service provider networking.

· Background in lab testing methodology and requirements

JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Conducts extensive lab evaluations and integration testing of network elements and document results.

· Formulates integrated video network architectures based upon demand, capacity, emerging network services, trends, and technologies

· Plans future network enhancements and directions for access, metro, and national networks.

· Provides detailed engineering support and consultation to field systems, design engineers, and implementation teams.

· Serves as primary subject matter expert in the area of IP Network Engineering

· Conduct engineering economic, alternative, and feasibility evaluations

· Develops network element technical specifications.

· Work with field systems to capture and document current digital video IP architectures and practices.

· Design, develop, introduce, and support IP network and security enhancements to both core and interactive digital video networks.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or telecommunications field with 5-8 yrs of professional experience in a telecommunications, digital video, or networking field. Masters Degree in electrical engineering or telecommunications with 3-5 yrs of professional experience in a telecommunications, digital video or networking field.


Telecommunications Industry certifications a plus

Responsibilities:

Overall Responsibility for helping manage the implementation of Enterprise Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence projects. This includes providing a primary point of contact for those projects. Takes projects from original concept through final implementation, full SDLC. Interfaces with all areas affected by the project. Position works with the functional and technical teams to define project and facilitate the development of project work plans. Leads the development and implementation of project plans and schedules. This includes development of work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans and status reports. Needs to report accurate project status to management. Leads project meetings with entire project team. Responsible to ensure project development life cycle is being followed and required deliverables are being completed, reviewed and signed- off on by appropriate parties. Follows department standards and processes. Reviews project deliverables to ensure project goals are accomplished and in-line with business objectives. Resolve project issues and resource allocation conflicts to expedite timely completion of projects.

Complete Description:

• Lead business workshops to drive requirements for Customer facing web portal. This includes planning, facilitating, summarizing and determining next steps of workshops.

• Document, compile and maintain all (business & technical) requirements for program

• Work with the business on prioritization and business benefit of requirements

• Understand, analyze and document client / customer business processes and workflows

• Serve as main point of contact for development team for clarifications of requirements

• Serve as main point of contact for team developing information architecture and visual design

• Coordinate with Test Lead to ensure complete coverage of requirements by testing team and to answer questions by test team regarding requirement intent.

• Perform integration testing as needed.
